This year, January 14th – January 20th is, according to the interwebz, National Pizza Week. And although you are welcome to your personal beliefs about the barrage of national food-themed holidays that have seemingly taken over our calendars, we figured it was the perfect opportunity to talk about beer’s best buddy.
Being on Boston’s North Shore, we’re blessed with an array of great pizza options. To help us trim the list down to a digestible number, we polled some members of our team and community to come up with a list of what we feel are five of the very best North Shore pizza options, period and end of story.
No list of area pizza places would be complete without Monte’s, a beloved Lynn institution. Founded in the 1940’s, Monte’s serves tasty, thin crust pizzas that displaced residents of the Massachusetts South Shore might eagerly identify as ‘bar pies.’ If you love bar pies, want to try your first, or want to give the style another try, go for the Monte’s Special with green peppers, mushrooms, salami, and onion!
If you’re in need of a brief departure from the ubiquitous NY and Greek-style pizza that dominates Massachusetts, look no further than Volo Craft Pizza. While Volo does offer NY-style pies for pizza purists, the Swampscott-based pizzeria specializes in Detroit-style pizza. Detroit-style pizza is served in thick, chewy, square-shaped slices of cheesy goodness with a bit more sauce than the Sicilian-style that it’s based on – and the sauce on top of the cheese and toppings. Our favorite is the classic Roni, featuring a plethora of incomparable cupperoni – that’s cupped pepperoni which, as cooked, raises the edges and chars them ever so slightly, creating a ‘cup’ of greasy pepperoni amazingness. Pro tip: dunk the leftover cupperonis in blue cheese or ranch.
Continuing the trend of offering something different, Flying Saucer Pizza Company in Salem makes delicious NY-style pizzas with a wide range of toppings and interesting combinations (buffalo chicken mac and cheese, anyone?) available on crusts that accommodate every diet type, from Vegan to Gluten-free. You can choose your own adventure at Flying Saucer, but our go-to is the pickle pizza, a white pie with olive oil, bacon, cheese, dill pickles, and ranch dressing. Flying Saucer was also the Readers’ Choice in the 2022 BONS (Best of the North Shore) awards, hosted by Northshore Magazine.
Sometimes you just need a good slice of pizza. As far as we’re concerned, you’re hard-pressed to find a more iconic North Shore no-frills pizza joint than Bianchi’s, which has been in business since the 50’s. Located on historic Revere Beach, this is the kind of place where you roll up to the counter, order two slices of gooey cheese pizza, and go sit across from the Atlantic while basking in the moment. All will be right with the world.
We know that we already gave some love to a pizza place in Lynn, but Ciao is so good that we couldn’t put together a top 5 list without including them. They serve some of the most delicious, brick-oven Neapolitan pizza in the state. They boast an expansive menu beyond their pizzas, which includes everything from arancini and scallops in brown butter and white wine to chicken milanese and braised short ribs. And they also have a full bar. If we’re sticking with pizza, we’re hard-pressed not to order the Campagnola, which features sausage, caramelized onions, and ricotta.
